Kurt Fredrickson, associate dean for Doctor of Ministry and Continuing Education and assistant professor of pastoral ministry, was recognized on April 9 by the Simi Valley City Council as the first recipient of the City Volunteer of the Year award. Simi Valley, Fredrickson’s city of residence, is located approximately 40 miles north of Los Angeles.

Fredrickson has dedicated 16 years to serving the city’s police department, currently as senior police chaplain.

“Kurt embodies the spirit of community service and has committed his life to serving others,” remarked Simi Valley Interim Chief of Police Ron Chambers, pointing out the countless hours Fredrickson has given to other community organizations including the Community Foundation, the Free Clinic of Simi Valley, the Crime Prevention Task Force, and the Task Force on Homelessness.

Chambers continued, “I cannot think of an individual in our community who is more deserving of this recognition.”

Prior to coming to Fuller in 2003, Fredrickson was on the pastoral staff at Simi Covenant Church in Simi Valley for 24 years, serving as senior pastor for 18 of those years.
