Fuller Professor Reflects on Heavenly Peace with His Music

Dr. Jeffrey Bjorck's piano arrangement of well-known carol “Silent Night” :: 12/13/12

When he’s not teaching at Fuller’s School of Psychology, Dr. Jeffrey P. Bjorck is composing music and playing the piano. His music has been used to soothe pediatric patients in hospitals and his contemporary piano arrangements and compositions have been featured in films, videos, and television productions.

For the holiday, Dr. Bjorck shares this peaceful piano arrangement of the classic Christmas carol “Silent Night.”

“My intent with this solo piano arrangement was to emphasize that deep, pensive silence, doubtless broken by the baby Jesus’ cries on that first Christmas Eve,” Bjorck said.

The seven-minute video features Bjorck’s piano music set to peaceful images of a crackling fire, warm candlelight, and pinecones.

When he created this simple video last year, Bjorck said he chose firelight and candlelight in the darkness to embellish the sense of peaceful calm.

“This also reminds me of the Apostle John’s words about Jesus:  “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it” (John 1:5),” Bjorck said. “It is my hope that this brief presentation will be an encouragement to those who view it, providing at least a few moments of peace in the midst of the hectic pace of the holidays.”

He added, “As each listener thinks of the lyrics to this classic carol, I hope that every one can gratefully reflect on the truly greatest Christmas Gift, offered when God gave up his rightful place as Lord of creation, took on the humble role of a servant, and was born as a helpless baby with a cross in his future (Philippians 2:5-11). Indeed, because of Jesus, we can “sleep in heavenly peace,” even in a noisy world!”
