Opportunities for Professional Training and Privileges

CATS students are eligible to seek employment as a Teaching Assistant (TA), a Research Assistant (RA), and an Instructor-In-Training (IIT). All three are paid positions. Students are responsible to seek these positions.

Incoming CATS students are expected to participate in TA training, held before the beginning of the Fall Term. Completion of TA training is required prior to serving as a TA or IIT, and also provides necessary background for further work in course development.

CATS students who serve as an IIT will give lectures, lead breakout groups, answer questions, etc. on a schedule determined with the professor. They will gain training and experience in faculty tasks such as course development, monitoring student progress, advising students, grading, and lecture development.

CATS students may participate in the biannual Teaching-Profession Workshop (TPW), which will prepare them for job hunting, teach them skills related to teaching in higher-education settings, and help them develop professional writing skills.

CATS students receive special library privileges, allowing them to borrow up to 100 items for up to 90 days. CATS students should become familiar with all library services.

Incoming CATS students are considered for fellowship awards based on prior academic work (i.e., graduate-level GPA and GRE scores) as well as faculty evaluation of letters of reference and the writing sample. Returning CATS students may apply for scholarships and fellowships, which are awarded based on merit.
