Biographical Information:
Betty Sue Brewster has taught language and culture acquisition in over 80 countries. Herself a
missionary kid from Venezuela, she has also enjoyed missionary service in
Mexico, Bolivia, and Kenya. Together with her late husband, Tom Brewster, she
wrote
Language Acquisition Made Practical (LAMP) (1976), popularizing a
method of language learning that focuses on relationship and interaction, and
Bonding and the Missionary Task (1981),
to encourage new missionaries to immediately immerse themselves in the new
language and culture in order to develop deep relationships. In addition, she
has authored and edited several helpful books and articles, such as
Community Is My Classroom (1986),
Pronunciation Activities for Language Learners
(1985),
Twelve Tips for Language Learners (1994), and “Preparing
Life-Long Language Learners” (in
Helping the Missionary Language Learner Succeed, 1995).
Beyond her teaching in the School of Intercultural Studies, she often teaches in other parts of the
world.
