Academic Program

Master of Arts Degree – African American Studies Concentration / Track
The African American Church Studies Program supports the African American Studies Track Master of Arts in Multicultural Ministries. This is a 96 unit program that consists of:

  • Biblical Studies (24 units)

  • Theology / Church History (28 units)

  • Ministry (12 units)

  • Electives (8 units)

  • African American Studies / Specialized Requirements (24 units)

The specialized requirements consist of courses that are focused on the African American experience throughout the African Diaspora.  Courses range from Afrocentric Biblical Hermeneutics to Theology and Hip Hop Culture.  The program also offers enough flexibility to tailor it to a student’s interest in the African American experience.

Master of Divinity Degree – African American Studies Track
The African American Church Studies Program Supports the African American Studies Track in the Master of Divinity with a concentration in Multicultural Ministries in African American Studies.  This is a 144 unit program that consists of:

  • Biblical Languages (20 units)

  • Biblical Studies (32 units)

  • Theology / Church History (32 units)

  • Ministry (36 units)

  • African American Studies (24 Units)

The courses in the concentration are specifically related to the African American religious experience.  There is a diversity of courses that allow students to tailor their program to their specific interest while ensuring that they are equipped as scholars and practitioners in the African American religious tradition.

Both academic programs are geared to meet the student’s needs.  A student who seeks to serve the church or become a practicing scholar will be satisfied with these programs.  The African American Church Studies Office supports its students through a mentoring relationship.  The office is set-up to maximize students’ success from matriculation through and after graduation.

Admissions
Students who have completed their undergraduate training are to be processed through admission as a regular degree seeking student. They are to work directly with the Office of Admission to process their application.  The African American Church Studies Office is available to support you in this process.  

Admission is only considered for the Fall and Spring quarters.
