January 19, 2006

Dear Alums,

This issue of AlumNews is filled with news about people living out their faith. The Arimborgos are living and ministering in Iquitos, Peru because Jennifer took a short-term service trip with her church. Al Jepson, as a member of the Alumni/ae Council, reflects on the importance of investing more time in being interested than in being interesting. Tim Kelly, John Hunter, and Ernst Volgenau are tackling difficult local and global problems. This kind of activism is consistent with one of the "marks" of Evangelicalism shared by President Mouw at the opening chapel service for winter quarter 2006. I know you will be encouraged and challenged by their stories and others in this issue of AlumNews.

May your 2006 be a year in which your relationship with Jesus Christ deepens, your love for Scripture grows, your activism on behalf of the gospel brings healing and repentance, and your theology is more "crucicentric."

In Christ,

Lucy Guernsey
Director, Alumni/ae and Church Relations

COUNCIL CORNER

Do we "spend too much time trying to be interesting," rather than "investing more time being interested"? Al Jepson (MDiv '58) offers keen insights on this question at www.fuller.edu/alumni_ae/E-News/2006-01/council.asp.

BOOKS OF NOTE

The following reading recommendations come from Kurt Fredrickson, director of the Doctor of Ministry program.

Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens, by Neil Cole (Jossey-Bass, 2005)
Cole here develops a new model of church--one that is not institutional, but incarnational and transformational. His book is part of a growing body of literature that articulates an ecclesiology promoting a new DNA for the church. This new model sees God's message being taken to where people live, rather than expecting people to show up at church. This book is a must-read; it will be the topic of conversations.

Breakout Churches, by Thom S. Rainer, (Zondervan, 2005)
I had difficulties with the premise of this book, which develops an understanding of the forward movement of the church around business concepts. As I heard about the book, I became intrigued enough to read it--and then to recommend it. Rainer takes the innovative principles developed in Jim Collins' Good to Great and applies them to the church, seeking ways to help churches advance. This is a good book--worth reading, critiquing, and making the principles applicable to specific ministry contexts.
