Scott Cormode to Be Installed into Hugh De Pree Chair
Scott Cormode will be installed into the Hugh De Pree Chair of Leadership Development in the School of Theology on Tuesday, May 13, from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. The installation service, to be held at First Congregational Church of Pasadena, will feature Dr. Cormode speaking on "Learning Our Way to Change." It is free and open to the public.
Dr. Cormode joined the faculty of Fuller's School of Theology in 2006, bringing significant leadership and teaching experience. He served for the previous decade as George Butler Associate Professor of Church Administration and Finance at Claremont School of Theology, and was also associate dean of the seminary. At Fuller, Cormode has taught classes addressing leadership in students' ministry contexts, and preparing students to make the often difficult transition between seminary and the practical issues of church ministry.
Cormode's research focuses on the formation of Christian leaders, and he has pioneered innovative ways to create learning environments that develop leaders. He wrote the acclaimed Almond Springs casebook and created the www.christianleaders.org website, both of which enable developing leaders to think theologically about a range of leadership situations. Books he has authored include Making Spiritual Sense: Christian Leadership as Theological Interpretation and the upcoming The Next Faithful Step: Advanced Christian Leadership. Working to build a scholarly approach to Christian leadership, Cormode founded the Academy of Religious Leadership (ARL), which is now the professional society for professors who teach leadership throughout theological education, and is founding editor of The Journal of Religious Leadership.
Cormode has a joint appointment at the De Pree Leadership Center of Fuller, where he is pursuing his current research project, "The Ecology of Vocation." The project examines how Christian leaders are formed, paying particular attention to the formative process that begins long before a student arrives at seminary and continues long after that student graduates.
In addition to his academic work, Cormode is ordained by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and preaches regularly at his local church.
The Hugh De Pree Chair of Leadership Development was established by the family of the late Hugh De Pree, an accomplished leader and brother of longtime Fuller board member Max De Pree, in order to cultivate leadership training programs within the School of Theology and the De Pree Leadership Center.
First Congregational Church is located at the corner of N. Los Robles Avenue and E. Walnut Street in Pasadena, next to the Fuller campus. For more information about the installation service, please contact the School of Theology Dean's Office at 626.584.5300, or email theology@fuller.edu. |
