Past, Present, and Future of the Asian American Church

May 1-2, 2024

This hybrid event is free and open to the public; registration is required. The event will be held virtually and in person on Fuller’s campus.

 

A total of two units of continuing education (CE) credit will be available for the Asian American Psychology Lecture on Friday, May 5. CE credits are offered at $20 for two units for Fuller alumni and $30 for two units for the general public. Please visit the registration page to purchase or register for credits. Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration 2024

Fuller’s Asian American Center invites you to its annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) celebration. This year, Fuller APAHM will reflect on the “Past, Present, and Future of the Asian American Church” with conversations led by scholars and practitioners Soong-Chan Rah, Timothy Tseng, Gordon Nagayama Hall, and Jessica ChenFeng.

About the Speakers


Soogn Chan rah Soong-Chan Rah, ThD, DMin
is the Robert Boyd Munger Professor of Evangelism at Fuller Theological Seminary. Prior to his appointment at Fuller, Dr. Rah served as the Milton B. Engebretson Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park Theological Seminary. He is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church, and a member of the Academy for Evangelism in Theological Education, the American Academy of Religion, and the American Society of Missiology.


Gordan Nagayama HallGordon Nagayama Hall, PhD
is Associate Director of Research in the Center on Diversity and Community and Professor of Psychology at the University of Oregon. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Dr. Hall was previously a professor of psychology at Kent State University and the Pennsylvania State University. His research interests are in Asian American physical and mental health. He is currently investigating the effects of stereotypes on mental health among Chinese international students. He served as President of the Asian American Psychological Association (AAPA) and received the AAPA Lifetime Achievement Award. Hall also served as President of the American Psychological Association Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues and received the Society's Distinguished Career Contributions to Research Award.

Panelists and Conversation Facilitators

Tim TsengTimothy Tseng, PhD is a Research Professor of History of Christianity and Asian American Studies and the Director of the Asian American Christian History Institute, a new initiative of Fuller’s Center for Asian American Theology and Ministry. Prior to Fuller, Dr. Tseng served as the Pacific Area Director for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship’s Graduate and Faculty Ministries.

Jessica Chen FengJessica ChenFeng  joined Fuller’s faculty in 2022 as Associate Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy for the Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy (DMFT) program. Dr. ChenFeng brings years of MFT teaching, research, and supervision experience, as well as clinical and consulting experience across ministry, community, and medical contexts. She is a regular presenter at local and national conferences and is often invited to speak about self-of-the-therapist development, decolonizing supervision, and Asian American issues.

Asian American Evangelical Church: History and Lessons

This session will examine Asian American Evangelicalism particularly over the last 50 years of the US Church. With specific emphasis on the Korean American immigrant story and the transition to an ethnic-specific second generation, we will also consider future implications for the larger Evangelical church, particularly in equipping and empowering of Asian American churches.

In this lecture, Dr. Gordon Nagayama Hall covers the history of Asian American mental health disparities, discusses past and current attempts to reduce such disparities, and proposes ways all therapists can make psychotherapy more personally relevant and effective for Asian Americans.
