A Call to Prayer for the Philippines

As we learn with each day's news reports, the crisis in the Philippines caused by last week's Typhoon Haiyan continues to grow in scale and devastation. One of the most powerful typhoons to ever reach land, it is likely the deadliest natural disaster to hit the Philippines.

Entire communities, such as the hard-hit city of Tacloban, located 400 miles southeast of Manila, were nearly flattened by towering storm surges, which also threw huge boats from the sea well onto the shore.

On-site relief experts tell us that the death toll could rise to 10,000 or more. Currently, an estimated two to three million people have lost their homes, and millions more are without access to adequate food, clean water, and medical care.

I would like to encourage our entire Fuller community to join together this week in prayer for the Philippines and all those suffering loss and injury. Please pray also for relief agencies and workers who are providing critically needed supplies, equipment and transportation services to reach those most in need.

If members of the Fuller community are looking for opportunities to support the relief effort, please consider these three organizations:

* World Vision -- worldvision.org
* World Relief -- worldrelief.org
* Food for the Hungry -- fh.org
