• OT567 Proverbs and Ecclesiastes (English text) - Tony Petrotta - Menlo Park
  This course is designed to explore the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. In addition, consideration will be given to a general understanding of OT Wisdom Literature as it relates to these books. Representative passages from Proverbs and Ecclesiastes will be studied in depth. Lectures and discussion will cover the historical and sociological setting, literary structure, and theological issues raised by the books. Attention will be given to developing exegetical skills, hermeneutical awareness, and theological reflection.

  Survey of the development of the Christian Church in American history from colonial times to the present. Emphasis will be placed on significant individuals, ideas, and practices that have shaped Christianity in the United States. 
   
• PH512 Christianity and Western Thought - Michael Beals - Menlo Park
  This course provides a survey introduction to the philosophical concepts and currents of the Western intellectual tradition and their influences on theological developments throughout the history of the Christian church. The impact of ancient Greek philosophies on theological reflection in the early and medieval churches will be examined. The diversity of modern and postmodern philosophies will also be considered for their roles in shaping Christian theology from the Reformation to the present.

  We often face decisions and questions that the writers of Scripture did not address. This introduction to Christian ethics aims to equip students to develop a concrete method to approach ethical decisions grounded in the teachings of Jesus and the New Testament. The course will begin with the largest bloc of teachings by Jesus, The Sermon on the Mount, and move outward to incorporate the corpus of the New Testament. It will also seek to recover the prophetic stream of Christian ethics as we reflect on contemporary social issues from diverse perspectives.
   
• PR517 Preachings for Occasional Services - Peter Rodgers - Sacramento
  This preaching practicum is designed to provide students with practice in preparing sermons for special ministry occasions. Preaching texts will be assigned to address pastoral situations such as funerals, weddings, baptisms, the celebration of the sacrament/ordinance of the Lord's Supper, a revival meeting, and an interdenominational service of worship. Class size will be limited to nine students.
   
• MD545 Ministry with Street Children - Gregory Burch - Sacramento

  This course will explore the complexities of the experiences of homeless children and youth living and/or working on the streets around the world or affiliated with street gangs. Students will gain an understanding of the key principles and basic tools needed to understand and minister with these children and youth. Through the analysis of case studies, students will understand the process of establishing an effective ministry for addressing the issues these children and youth face. Students will also grapple with how Christians can bring change to structural conditions that contribute to these global phenomenons. This course is the kick off to our Children at Risk Emphasis. 

• TC517 Theological Method for Worship and the Arts - Todd Johnson - New York City
  This course is the introductory course for all students entering Worship, Theology and the Arts (WTA) concentrations at the master's level. This course introduces the students in the WTA concentration to the methodology that will undergird their theological study of Christian worship, along with narrative, performing, and plastic arts. Beginning with Augustine's philosophy of language and learning as introduced and developed in De Magistro and De Doctrina Christina, and his assertion that all we have to communicate with are signs, words, and gestures, this course will explore methods of exegeting signs and gestures to supplement the exegesis of words. This course has three elements: course readings, lectures, and interviews with artists, experiential learning through "field trips" to museums, theatres, etc., and class discussions and group and individual projects.
