Supervising an Intern:
A key component of an internship is the relationship between the supervisor and the intern. The supervisor provides mentoring, modeling and coaching for the intern in practical ministry, and spiritual and theological reflection. We invite you to partner with us in preparing future leaders for ministry and helping to discern their gifts and call.
All Field Education supervisors at Fuller must be certified by completing a Supervisor Application and reading the Supervisor Orientation Guidelinesand the Supervisor Handbook. The supervisor must be recertified every two years.
Supervisor Qualifications and Requirements:
- Minimum of three years in a related full-time ministry position post seminary
- Minimum of one year in current position
- Formal theological training (i.e., Bible college or seminary level theological education)
- Committed to spend at least one hour per week, one on one with the intern in theological reflection, prayer, planning and evaluation. (If there is more than one Fuller student doing an internship with the same supervisor, please contact the Field Education and Ministry Formation Office for further information).
- Collaborate with the intern on developing the Learning Agreement and evaluate the intern’s progress each quarter
- Provide a learning structure that is challenging, educational and supportive, and ensure the participation of the church or organization in the internship
- Complete the supervisor approval/certification process: submit a supervisor application, read and agree to the Supervisor Orientation Guidelines and the Supervisor Handbook.
- Supervisors may wish to become familiar with Field Education's Guidelines for Theological Reflection. Students are expected to apply this model during their internship and utilize it to theologically reflect with their supervisors.
- Supervisor may also attend the Ministry Enrichment Seminars that are hosted by Field Education each quarter. The seminars are open to the public.
