For example, Peter was imprisoned by Herod, who intended to execute him as he had James, the brother of John. "But earnest prayer was made for him by the church" (Acts 12:5). In answer, an angel appeared to Peter and the chains on his hands miraculously fell off. The angel then led him past two guards without incident, and the prison's main gate "opened to them of its own accord" (v. 10). When Peter arrived at the house where an extended prayer meeting for him was being held, there was great joy and amazement as it finally dawned on the people how "the Lord had brought him out of prison" (v. 17). Thus the theology of prayer is well summed up by Ezekiel 36:37: "For this I will be called on by the house of Israel, that I may [then] do it."
