Meet the Graduates:
Broderick Leaks
More than 700 students complete their degrees at Fuller this year, with plans that will take them into a range of ministries and vocations. This series highlights just a few of these graduates.
When Broderick Leaks was searching for a clinical psychology program where he would also be exposed to biblical scholarship and theology, a professor at his undergraduate institution, Baylor University, suggested Fuller. Broderick visited the Pasadena campus and, he confirms, “I knew this was where God was calling me.”
This year, as he completes his PhD in Clinical Psychology, Leaks’s Fuller experience has not disappointed him. “I have received excellent training and instruction at Fuller, and I feel equipped and empowered to fulfill my calling as a clinical psychologist”—a calling that will take him, he reports, to university counseling centers. “Throughout my training at Fuller, I have had the opportunity to work at counseling centers at Azusa Pacific University and the University of Southern California, and I enjoy working with college students and walking alongside them as they face psychological difficulties,” says Leaks. “University students are at a unique stage of development where their educational and relational experiences have the potential to shape them for the rest of their lives. I consider it a calling to help them cope with psychological difficulties that can act as a barrier to the student's accomplishing their dreams. I also would like,” he adds, “to teach university level psychology courses specifically in the area of ethnicity and diversity.”
With an additional passion for community development work, Leaks serves on the board of directors for the Pasadena Hope Community Development Corporation. “We are hoping that our non-profit will serve as a catalyst for partnerships among non-profits in Pasadena while meeting the community's needs through education, empowerment, and economic development,” he says.
“I have been stretched and challenged at Fuller,” Leaks comments, “but throughout the entire program I was surrounded by a loving and supportive community that wanted me to succeed. I am leaving Fuller with a deeper understanding of human nature and interactions, and a greater appreciation of the work that God is doing in all our lives.”
