James Furrow to Be Installed into Freed Chair

James L. Furrow will be installed into the Evelyn and Frank Freed Chair of Marriage and Family Therapy on Tuesday, April 8, from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. in Travis Auditorium at Fuller Theological Seminary. "An Inscrutable Bond: Engaging the Promises of Faith and Family" will be the topic of Furrow’s address at the service, which will be followed by a reception on the patio outside Travis Auditorium. Both the service and reception are free and open to the public.

Dr. Furrow has been a member of Fuller’s School of Psychology faculty since 1995. For the past four years he has served as the program director for the Department of Marriage and Family, and he has been the co-director of the Travis Research Institute’s Center for Research on Child and Adolescent Development since 1997.

Furrow’s research interests include a focus on child and adolescent development and religiousness. His writing on adolescent development explores the role of personal and social resources in reducing risk behavior and promoting well-being among youth. Furrow’s clinical interests and expertise include a focus on the use of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in couple and family therapy; he is certified as an EFT therapist, supervisor, and trainer. Furrow’s work has been published in such scholarly journals as Applied Developmental Science, Developmental Psychology, the Journal of Psychology and Christianity, Review of Religious Research, the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, and the Journal of Systemic Therapies.

The Evelyn and Frank Freed Chair of Marriage and Family Therapy has been established in the Department of Marriage and Family of the School of Psychology at Fuller by a generous gift from Evelyn and Frank Freed. The purpose of the chair is to integrate a faith-filled theological vision of wholeness in human relationships with the study and practice of marital and family therapy.

The Freeds have been gracious and longstanding partners of Fuller. Dr. Frank H. Freed, a clinical psychologist, earned his MDiv and PhD degrees at Fuller, and Mrs. Evelyn Freed has served on Fuller’s Board of Trustees since 1992. She is an active member of the School of Psychology Dean’s National Advisory Council. Among their many gifts to Fuller are those that also endow the Evelyn and Frank Freed Chair of Integration and the Office of the Dean of the School of Psychology.
