February 2011

February 18, 2011

Dear Alumni,

The two alumni who tell their stories below, Bill Kennemer and Mark Meeks, are making a difference in their communities through public service. Like many Fuller graduates, they are serving others through civic involvement.

At Fuller, involvement as a seminary in our community is a critical part of our mission. With our Pasadena campus just two blocks from City Hall, we are active participants in the life of our neighborhood. We are part of our Pasadena Mayor's group called "Pasadena: City of Learning," which promotes innovative collaborations among the city's institutions of higher learning...on the board of the Pasadena Playhouse District Association, which works closely on day-to-day issues of city life...on the Committee of Large Utility Users, striving to keep our city's energy usage as low as possible...on the committee for Pasadena's annual "One City, One Story" annual book reading campaign...to name just a few involvements!

We're always looking for ways to share Fuller's many resources with our neighbors, and to learn from what they have to offer us. In May, for example, we will jointly offer a lecture series with Caltech on neuroscience and moral virtue. Each year our Office for Urban Initiatives leads a citywide effort to count Pasadena's homeless persons, helping the city obtain funding for appropriate services. We engage in research and mentoring collaborations with the Pasadena Unified School District and local youth organizations. Our Brehm Center frequently partners with local institutions on performances and exhibits--and will connect with the Art Center College of Design on an upcoming series on faith and the arts. As a campus we are open to the community, inviting local residents to the many lectures, concerts, galleries, and other events always taking place at Fuller.

As Bill Kennemer says below, "there is a need for people of faith to participate and make an impact." If you have suggestions about ways Fuller can partner with its neighbors at any of our campuses, please let me know!
