Dear Alums,
Our campuswide theme at Fuller for this new academic year is "Pressing Forward," taken from Philippians 3:14: "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus." Richard Mouw gave a wonderful meditation on this verse last week at our opening faculty/staff chapel service. But the largest applause of the morning was in recognition of Phyllis Mouw, who was at the service--honoring her and the God who is healing her after the stroke she suffered in July. Doug McConnell welcomed all of us in his new role as provost. Please join us in praying for the Mouws and McConnells as they press on this year in their leadership of Fuller and service for the Kingdom.
We trust you will be blessed by the Alumni in Action story below about Andrea and Scott Sward, who are clearly pressing on toward God's heavenly call amidst tragedy and loss.
Lastly, in the Alumni Office we are pressing on in another way this September as we welcome our new Director of Church Relations, Kutter Callaway. Kutter, an alum himself (MAT '06, PhD '10), will help us strengthen and expand our connections with churches near and far.
May you sense Christ's fortifying presence as you press on toward the goal in your own work and life this fall season.

WHAT ARE FACULTY READING?
Senior Professor of New Testament Art Patzia offers these reading recommendations:
For popular and inspirational reading, I enjoyed Unbroken (Random House, 2010), by Laura Hillenbrand. The subtitle, A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, says it all. More academically, I just wrote a blurb for Peter Rodgers' book Text and Canon, to be published by Wipf and Stock this fall. Although the book is not a manual for textual criticism, the author selects a number of variant readings whose authenticity may be explained by their connection with the narrative history of the Old Testament rather than the acceptable norms of modern text critics. His ideas were thoughtfully presented and worth considering.
