The Trial of Jesus

Will the jury sentence Jesus to death under current California law? Join us for a mock sentencing trial of Jesus and then participate in the jury deliberations! A panel discussion afterward will give you an opportunity to ask questions as you think through legal, social, and faith issues related to the death penalty.

Prop 34, which seeks to replace the death penalty with a life sentence without possibility of parole, is on the ballot in California this fall. This trial is an opportunity for you to wrestle with how you will vote on it.

The prosecuting attorney for this trial, Mark Osler, has argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and teaches law at the University of St. Thomas. The defense attorney for this trial, Jeanne Bishop, is an assistant public defender in the Office of the Cook County Public Defender in Illinois and the sister of Nancy Bishop Langert, who was murdered along with her husband and their unborn child in 1990. Since the killing of her family members, she has been a passionate advocate for violence prevention, sensible gun laws, and forgiveness. (Read more of her story here.)
