ears of Equipping Latino/a Leaders for Ministry
“The Center for the Study of Hispanic Church and Community addresses the ministry needs and complexities of the largest ethnic group in the United States,” says Associate Dean Juan Martínez, who has served as the Center’s director since 2001. “Latinos are a growing and increasingly diverse group of people.” To effectively minister in their communities, Latino/a pastors and leaders “must understand that diversity and its implication for church and mission,” he explains, remarking that most of the Center’s students are already pastors and seeking continuing education at Fuller.
Dr. Martínez, who earned both his ThM and PhD at Fuller, was first attracted to the seminary by “its clear commitment to forming Latino/a pastors and leaders through the Hispanic Center.” That commitment grows stronger as the Center makes big plans for the future. It is currently working to expand its offerings to some of Fuller’s regional centers through online and live video feed courses, hoping to offer degrees in that format at the Northern California and Houston campuses as early as September 2010. “Our goal is to double the percentage of Latino students at Fuller--to ten percent--in three to five years,” Martínez explains.
Such growth for the Hispanic Center is inevitable, with the support of the wider Fuller community and the dedicated leadership of Martínez, who says, “My primary passion is understanding the Latino Protestant community and how to develop Latino/a leaders who can effectively serve the community and the world at large.”

¨El Centro para el Estudio de Iglesia y Comunidad Latina aborda las necesidades del ministerio y las complejidades del grupo étnico más grande en los Estados Unidos”, dice el Decano Asociado Juan Martínez quien ha servido como el director del Centro desde el 2001. “La comunidad latina está creciendo en número y diversidad.” Para ministrar eficazmente en sus comunidades, los pastores y líderes latinos ¨deben entender esa diversidad y sus implicaciones para la iglesia y misión,” explica él, observando que la mayoría de los estudiantes del Centro ya son pastores que buscan educación continuada en Fuller.
El Dr. Martínez, que obtuvo su ThM y PhD en Fuller, fue primeramente atraído al seminario por ¨su compromiso claro a la formación de pastores y líderes latinos por medio del Centro Latino.” Ese compromiso se fortalece en los grandes planes que tiene el Centro para el futuro. Actualmente está trabajando para expandir sus programas a algunos de los centros regionales de Fuller por medio de clases en el internet y cursos de video en vivo, esperando ofrecer títulos en ese formato en los planteles del Norte de California y Houston a partir de septiembre del 2010. ¨Nuestra meta es doblar el porcentaje de estudiantes latinos en Fuller—al diez por ciento—en tres a cinco años,” explica Martínez.
Tal crecimiento para el Centro Latino es inevitable, con el amplio apoyo de la comunidad de Fuller y liderazgo dedicado de Martínez, quien dice, ¨Mi pasión primordial es entender la comunidad Latina protestante y cómo desarrollar líderes latinos que puedan servir eficazmente a la comunidad y al mundo en general.”
