Dear Alums,
At the heart of the Department of Marriage and Family is a desire to serve the church. In our training of marital and family therapists and family life educators, we strive to engage our students in our vision of family professionals using their expertise in ways that build up the body of Christ.
Our faculty and alums provide inspiring examples of this work. Using federal funding obtained through the California Healthy Marriages Coalition, Dr. Cameron Lee recently established the Fuller Institute for Relationship Education, or "FIRE." FIRE helps local congregations establish affordable marriage- and relationship-education ministries by training volunteer staff. Cameron also continues to direct our curriculum that qualifies Fuller students for certification as family life educators.
Dr. Terry Hargrave and Sharon Hargrave have developed a program for strengthening couples preparing for a life of ministry. Under Sharon's leadership, the Strong Marriages/Successful Ministries program provides small group enrichment experiences to Fuller student couples, with curriculum based on the principles of Terry's restoration therapy. Terry and Sharon also use the restoration model to help troubled couples in a group context with marital intensives--a sequestered group therapy program that has had remarkable results. And Terry's writing and speaking continue to provide valuable resources to families, therapists, and educators in changing times.
In this issue of AlumNews you will read about yet another member of the Fuller community, Bernie Newton, who is doing good work in his marital and family therapy practice. Inspiring examples of family professionals serving the body of Christ!
