Dear Alums,
This fall President Richard Mouw released a revised and expanded edition of Uncommon Decency: Christian Civility in an Uncivil World. Dr. Mouw comments on a statement by historian Martin Marty, who describes a common problem in the modern world. Many civil people often lack strong convictions, and those with strong convictions aren't always very civil. The tragic events in Tucson this past week highlighted the toxic cultural environment we live in. In his book, Dr. Mouw encourages us to find a path in between these two extremes to engage in substantive dialogue with "convicted civility."
In October 2010, the Colorado regional campus hosted Dr. Mouw for a series of interfaith dialogue events designed to create a model for this kind of cultural conversation. We took an honest look at some of the challenging topics of interfaith/interreligious dialogue--Protestant-Catholic, Evangelical-Mormon, and Christian-Jewish--tackling the tough questions but also seeking some common ground. These kinds of events illustrate the distinctive role of Fuller Theological Seminary in the modern world.
In this issue of AlumNews you will read about a new and enlightening interfaith journal developed by a group of Fuller alums that offers theological insight and practical tips on how to engage in interfaith dialogue in your community. And keep your eyes open for other opportunities related to this topic that appear regularly in this monthly AlumNews e-newsletter.
