Lively class discussions!
We offer a diverse collection of classes here at Fuller
Seminary Northern California, two of which are featured here.
Listen to some of the students as they talk
about why they took their particular class and what they hope to gain by taking
it:
TC581 -
Worship, Theology, and Art Touchstone (Menlo Park)
Karin Dutra, an
Office Manager at an educational non-profit, and Angela Kendell, who has a call to work with Elders, explain why
they took this class:
Elle:Why did you choose the WTA Touchstone class?
Karin I want to
understand more about the dynamics of art and theology as I continue to
interact artistically with my home church.
I have added an interest in learning more about video and dance in
church because there are so many film and theater students in class
Elle: What have you enjoyed the most so far?
Karin: The
discussion so far has been great!
Elle: What are your hopes for the rest of this
class?
Karin: To keep
learning!
Elle:Why did you choose the WTA Touchstone class?
Angela: Following
this course I have two classes remaining, after which I want to work with
Elders in a retirement and end-of-life setting.
My practicum, in such a setting, confirmed my love of Elders, their ever
increasing numbers, and the necessity for Christ in that setting. This WTA class has already sharpened and
increased forms of interacting with seniors with art, music, poetry, and
dance. My work will be to intertwine
this into meaningful worship with these bright, life experienced people who are
eager to learn, and open to new experiences, whether one-on one or communally.
Elle: What have you enjoyed the most so far?
Angela: So far the study of Patti Smith’s “Flag” and Dr Johnston’s
“Trilogy on Liturgy,” my classmates, and teachers have been most enjoyable.
Elle: What are your hopes for the rest of this
class?
Angela: My
personal hope for the class is to be less computer “challenged” so that I can
enjoy the work even more!
CLASS DESCRIPTION: St. Francis of Assisi famously stated that one should proclaim the gospel at all times, and if necessary use words. This course introduces students to ministry resources that are nonverbal and can be seen as complementary to verbal proclamation of the gospel. In a world that is becoming increasingly comfortable with symbolic and artistic communication, this course invites the student to consider the various ways the gospel can be proclaimed in symbolic and artistic ways, and the strengths and limits of these forms of communication.
CN557 -
Pastoral Care and Addictions (Sacramento)
Lanaea Schiavone, the Student Services
Coordinator in Sacramento, explains why she is involved in this class for the
second time (yes, it’s that good!)
Elle:Why did you choose the Pastoral Care and
Addictions class?
Lanaea: I took this course in Fall 2010 and I am facilitating it
again this Fall over Polycom with Fuller
Live! I loved this course the first
time I took it as I learned more about addictions, counseling, and caring for
the broken (including myself!).
Elle: What have you enjoyed the most so far and
what are your hopes for this class?
Lanaea: I am looking forward to being a part of this course again
and being refreshed on the causes and manifestations of different addictions,
as well as how to come alongside an individual and help them through the deep
valleys of life.
CLASS DESCRIPTION: The addictive process is an enormous and global problem. Unfortunately, pastors, missionaries, and other religious professionals are rarely trained to identify and respond appropriately to people who are addicted. This course explores all aspects of pastoral care for people struggling with addictions. In addition to providing theological and biblical perspectives on the addictive process, this class will help participants develop the understanding and skills needed by pastors and others who seek to help families impacted by addiction.
