An Integrated Perspective: Psychology, Faith, and Life

To Alvin Dueck, psychology is a discipline that touches every aspect of what it means to be human--the sciences, the arts, culture, and especially the spiritual life. As professor of the integration of psychology and theology, Dueck appreciates working in a seminary environment that shares his holistic vision. "I was drawn to Fuller precisely because of its commitment to a serious dialogue between theology and psychology," he says.

Dueck aims to empower his students to approach their work with spiritual and cultural sensitivity. "It is my passion to encourage them to explore creative ways of engaging in the conversation between psychology and theology and, in doing so, to help the Church be faithful to its calling to be a light in the world," he explains.

Dueck also shares his passion with those he encounters in his work in interfaith and international contexts. He is engaged in Christian-Muslim conflict resolution efforts and, additionally, works with mission organizations to improve mental health awareness and services in different parts of the world. Most recently he has traveled extensively to China, offering training and consultation there in the area of pastoral counseling.

"The human being is a walking mystery," says Dueck, "and healing is a gift from God."
