Chris Loong

More than 700 students will complete their degrees at Fuller this year, with plans that will take them into a range of places, vocations, and ministries. This series highlights just a few of those graduates.

Chris Loong, who completes his MDiv this spring, came to seminary after six years of experience working and interning at two charismatic churches in his native Malaysia, but he does not plan to return to his home country yet.  “I hope to continue to find guidance from the Lord so that I am able to establish a ministry among the Jewish community here in the U.S.,” he explains.

“The Lord has placed on me a burden to reach out to the Jewish people of America,” Loong shares.  “Apart from Israel, the U.S. is the nation with the next highest population of Jewish people.”

In order to investigate this calling, Loong decided to develop an internship experience—part of the “field education” requirement for his MDiv—that would allow him to explore ministry among members of the Jewish community in Los Angeles. Through an elderly man he met while walking and praying through a local neighborhood, Loong became connected to the Jewish assisted living facility where the man lived. He was soon paying regular visits to this man and other residents.

“Too many of the residents of the facility has been left alone, neglected by their own loved ones, and living at this home just waiting to pass on,” he observes.  “I had to learn how to talk, live, and lead with transforming love, and these experiences have pushed me to greater dependence upon the source of all true and genuine love, God.”

In ministry to these elderly residents, Loong also felt his broader calling to the American Jewish community confirmed.  “Through the encouragement of my internship supervisors, I was able to see how God’s love and blessing could be shared with the people at the assisted living home,” Loong says, “and through the internship experience, Fuller has helped me confirm my calling and affirmed my vision to minister to Jewish Americans.”
