Children at Risk

From the AIDS orphan to the child soldier to the sexually exploited young girl, alarming numbers of kids struggle in unjust situations that put them at risk. We have a mandate to care for the little ones in our midst. But how?

At Fuller, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the problems children face in today's world. Our faculty—leading scholars and seasoned practitioners in ministry with children at risk—will equip you to reflect theologically and missiologically on this crying need ... and develop effective strategies for change.

How will you reach out to children in need with Christ's holistic care?

FacultyDesiree Segura-April
"I believe that God weeps over the children at risk around the world, and the Church is called to respond with a transformative gospel in action," says Desiree Segura-April, who joined Fuller's faculty after teaching and pastoring in Costa Rica. Through such courses as "Girl Child: The Problem and the Potential" and "Ministry with Street Children," she sees her role as a trail guide for students, challenging them to grow and stretch as agents of God's mission. profile
Student Testimonies
Nelli Karkkainen  (MACCS graduate in Children at Risk emphasis)
“When coming to Fuller to study in the MA in Cross-Cultural Studies with an emphasis in Children at Risk, I knew that I wanted to work with children in a cross-cultural setting. But throughout my program God used the classes, professors, and other students to challenge my thinking and to focus my direction into either hands-on work or research with trafficked and/or sexually exploited children in Southeast Asia. Even having already graduated from the program I am still constantly continuing to broaden and wrestle with my knowledge about God’s heart for children at risk issues around the world and sharing about what I learn with others.

Ashley McCleery  (current MACCS student in the Children at Risk emphasis)
"I struggled finding a seminary that combined theology with my passion for justice and compassion for children.  However, as soon as I heard about Fuller's children at risk concentration, I knew this was exactly where the Lord wanted me.  After completing one year of my program, I have more questions than answers, but I do know one thing for sure:  the Lord is guiding my path, which will hopefully lead to working with sexually exploited women and children."

Alumni in Action

Kit Ripley (MDiv 1999)
For Kit Ripley, the idea that people can find new life in Christ is anything but an abstraction. Ripley ministers at the New Life Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which is a home for ethnic minority women and girls who are at risk for, or are victims of, labor exploitation and sexual abuse. "There are always surprises in Thailand," she says, "but I think the greatest surprises for me happen when I see residents' lives radically changed." read more

Janay Garrick (MAICS)
I was in Guatemala for the summer, living in a tin-roofed orphanage with 12 teammates and 100 children, hidden in the mountains on the road to El Salvador. I was experiencing my first mission trip, pushing past fears of dying at the hands of guerillas or contracting a deadly disease, and trusting that God was sending me overseas to bless, serve, and save children. Turns out, it was the other way around. read more
