Commencement 2008

Short-Term JOBS

Commencement at Fuller is a major event, with over 500 graduates and 4,000 guests gathered at Lake Avenue Church. It takes a crew of about 100 people to provide the support needed to make this very special day work for everyone. And it is a very exciting day, both for graduates and their families and those who are working to make it happen.

Most of the work occurs on the day of Commencement, Saturday, June 14, between 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (lunch is provided onsite). Some assistance is needed for setup on Friday, June 13. Since this is the last day of the quarter, if you are taking classes this quarter, you would have to be sure that you could hand in all your work by the end of the day Thursday (we must be able to rely on you if you are scheduled to work Friday).

Some jobs begin earlier, as early as May 27, when we begin distributing academic regalia to graduates. We are also seeking a few good people for manager’s roles, which would begin even sooner.

The basic pay for most staff roles is $9.00 per hour. Managers are paid at higher rates.

We are especially interested in hiring members of the Fuller community – students, student spouses, and staff (staff may qualify for overtime pay).

Please let us know of your interest right away using the link at the end of this page.

Regalia

We start distributing academic regalia (caps, gowns, and hoods) Tuesday, May 27, in the Payton Hall lobby. Hours are generally about 11:00 a.m. through 6:30 p.m. several days of the week. Although people able to work full shifts are very welcome, we are also open to various combinations. This role includes work on Friday, June 13, and on Saturday, June 14 at Lake Avenue Church, where we also collect the regalia immediately after the service and sort and pack it for return.

Student Lineup

About 30 people are needed on Saturday to help check graduates in, get them seated in exactly the right place, and help them get across the stage in the right order. The whole process is intricately choreographed to make it work perfectly without any rehearsal. A few people are needed to help set things up on Friday.

Ushers

We need about 30 ushers, organized in three teams, to assist the 4,000 guests on Saturday. Ushers take “tickets” during the limited admission period, hand out programs, monitor and assist with seating, and help provide other assistance during the service to make sure it is enjoyable for our guests. Several people are needed to attend to the special needs of guests with disabilities. A few people may be needed to help set things up on Friday.

Transport and Setup

A crew of about six provides one of the most important services of the entire Commencement weekend. They load two trucks first thing Friday morning with everything we need for Commencement, unload it at Lake Avenue Church, and distribute it around the church. They assist staff in all areas with various setup needs both Friday and Saturday, then break things down, gather them up, load them up, and unload everything back at the Seminary after it is all over. Must be available all day Friday and Saturday, 6:30 a.m. until about 4:00 p.m. Must be able to lift reasonable weight and move carefully to avoid injury or damage.

Childcare

About 25 people are needed on Saturday to care for about 75-90 children, under six years of age, of our graduates and their families so that they can enjoy the Commencement service and not worry about their children. Childcare is provided at the Commencement site, and is supervised by experienced daycare personnel.

Faculty Lineup

A few people are needed to help check in and seat the 80-90 faculty and trustees who will be seated on the platform at Commencement and assist them with their needs. May need a little assistance setting up on Friday.

Information Booth

A few people are needed to staff the information booths on campus on Friday, June 13, and at Lake Avenue Church on Saturday, June 14, greeting people, answering questions, providing forms and publications, taking orders for Commencement photographs and recordings, etc.
