Frequently Asked Questions for Field Education
Introduction The mission of the Field Education program at Fuller is to support the development of our students in becoming effective ministers for Jesus Christ. Through their participation in Field Education internships--whether ministering in churches, hospitals, prisons, missions, or social services--they will experience supervised practical ministry training, opportunities for theological reflection and spiritual formation, valuable seminars, and ongoing assistance from Fuller's Field Education Office. Field Education helps prepare School of Theology students for ministry at each of our campuses, including Pasadena, Colorado, Northern California, Southern California, Southwest, and Northwest. Our students represent eighty countries and over one hundred denominations. In order to accomplish our mission, we depend on partnerships with churches and ministry organizations in all parts of the world. Quality supervision is vital to our program and we welcome the assistance of trained leaders who desire to mentor our students.
The Field Education Program
All Master of Divinity (MDiv) students in the School of Theology will complete two internships. Master of Arts in [Specialized Ministry] concentrations may include a Field Education component. Field Education opportunities are also open to other Masters-level students who wish to participate. The MDiv curriculum includes:
1. A nine-month part-time church internship (FE 1).
2. An additional internship in a church, institutional or mission setting (FE 2).
The FE 1 Church Internship
The FE 1 internship involves participation in church ministry for three academic quarters, with a time commitment of at least ten hours per week. Each student will be supervised by a pastor who has been approved by the Field Education Office. Students must meet with their supervisor for at least one hour per week for theological, personal, and ministry reflections.
Components of the FE 1 church internship:
1. Church Ministry Experience. Participate in areas of church leadership such as worship, Christian Education, pastoral care and counseling, evangelism and mission, or administration and financial management.
2. Ministry Enrichment Seminars. Attend three seminars during the nine-month internship (Pasadena campus students only). Seminars are regularly sponsored by the Field Education Office.
3. Theological Reflection Group. Attend the Introduction to Theological Reflection Seminar and submit a response sheet (first quarter; Pasadena students only). Write and present a case study from the internship experience, and listen to and reflect on the cases of others in the group (second quarter; Pasadena , Southwest, Northern California, and Northwest campus students only).
4. Field Education Interviews. Meet with Field Education staff during the first and third quarter of the internship to discuss needs, goals, and progress of the internship (Pasadena campus students only).
FE 2 Internships
FE 2 internships may take place in a variety of settings including the local church, parachurch or mission organizations, social service agencies, hospitals, or correctional facilities. Students may also participate in Clinical Pastoral Education. (Refer to the Intern Handbook for details on CPE credit at Fuller. For information on CPE sites, please visit the ACPE directory and Pacific Region of the ACPE websites. For information on how to register for CPE at Fuller, click here.) Each student will meet weekly with his or her supervisor for theological, personal, and ministry reflections. FE 2 internships may be part-time for three academic quarters or full-time for one quarter.
