How to Register for a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

There are three FE courses for Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE):**

  • FE509 – One Quarter, Full time (at least 35 hours per week)
  • FE510 – Two Quarters, Half-time (at least 20 hours per week)
  • FE511 – Three Quarters, Part-time (less than 20 hours per week)

Following are steps to take before you can register for any one of the above courses:

  1. Attend a Pre-CPE Seminar sponsored by the Office of Field Education entitled “Understanding Hospital Chaplaincy: How to Prepare for CPE”. For more information on the next Pre-CPE Seminar scheduled, go to our Ministry Enrichment Seminar website. Also, the seminar is available online at ‘Fuller on iTunes U’ through moodle.fuller.edu and CD/DVD from the Library or from your extension site.

Extension Sites – please check with the Student Services Coordinator and/or the Program Manager/Coordinator at your extension campus for a pre-recorded CD to which you can listen.

Note: This step must be completed before you can register for CPE. If there is no Pre-CPE Seminar currently scheduled, or you are not able to attend the one that is scheduled, you may listen to the recording of the past seminar. You can access the seminar through Fuller iTunesU Moodle, borrow a CD from the McAlister library or Extension Site Offices, or purchase a CD from the Academic Technology Center (ATC). For instructions on accessing Moodle, go to our Ministry Enrichment Seminar link.

Also, in order to get credit for attending the Seminar (or listening to it by Moodle or CD), students on all campuses (Pasadena and Extension sites) must complete and submit a Seminar Response Sheet to the Office of Field Education.

  2. Select a CPE site accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). A list of accredited institutions is available on the ACPE website site directories.

Important Note: the internship site must be accredited by the ACPE (and no other CPE organizations). Check to make sure that your internship site is listed among the ACPE accredited institutions. Due to competitive enrollment, it is strongly recommended that you apply at least six months to one year prior to the expected month of enrollment.

Also, if you are on the ordination track for your denomination, you will need to verify that the site is approved by your church leadership and/or committee as well.

  3. Apply for CPE online through the regional website. For Pacific Region, click here.

Note: Enrollment to CPE programs in some sites may be more competitive than others in California. It is, therefore, strongly recommended that you apply at a minimum of six months prior to the expected month of enrollment. When you apply online, make sure to print out your entry before you hit “Submit,” as you will not be able to retrieve it later. You will need to send the hard copy of your application along with the application fee to the site(s) to which you have applied at a later date.

  4. Pay tuition to the CPE site after you have been accepted. (You will not have to pay tuition to Fuller.)

  5. Submit an Advanced Standing Request Form to the Office of Field Education. The form can be downloaded from the Field Education’s Vital Documents website.

Please drop off the completed Advanced Standing Request Form at the Office of Field Education. To mail, please use the address below:

Note: This step is necessary before continuing to Step 6 below. (No fax accepted)

We encourage you to visit the Field Education’s website and read all the pertinent information, especially the Intern Handbook. The ECD for FE509/510/511 is also available through this site.

  6. Obtain a Course Approval Notification from the Field Education Assistant in the Office of Field Education. The Course Approval Notification will be emailed to your academic advisor, with a copy to you.

  7. Contact your Academic Advisor for the CRN to register online. You will need the Course Approval Notification from Field Ed prior to getting the CRN from your Academic Advisor.

  8. Register for 0 units for FE509, FE510, or FE511. No Fuller tuition will be charged.
Note: For billing purposes, CPE is zero units, but for loan deferment purposes (but not new loans), it is considered full-time (for FE509) or half-time (FE510). Please contact the Student Financial Services or Registrar’s office for details.

**Internships may begin any quarter, though it is recommended that you complete approximately one third of your program prior to starting your first internship. Special permission from the Director of Field Education is needed to begin an internship with less than 24 units completed.

Note: The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) internships (FE509, 510, and 511) are different from the ten-week Hospital Internship (FE546). For more information on FE546 Hospital Internship, please talk to one of the Field Education Advisors and/or go to this link.
