MH521: The History and Theology of Evangelical Awakenings (4 units)
Paul E. Pierson, Dean Emeritus and Senior Professor of History of Mission and Latin American Studies
Spring 2003 Pasadena
DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this course is to make a detailed study of the revivals and evangelical awakenings in both Western and non-Western countries which have provided the dynamic for evangelism, missionary expansion, and social improvement over the centuries. A definition of revival will be attempted, defining it biblically and theologically as well as descriptively and phenomenologically. A survey of awakenings in the history of the Church up to the 17th Century will be made, but most attention will be paid to those revivals which have occurred from the 17th century up to the present day. The contribution made by Jonathan Edwards to our understanding of revival will be studied, together with that of Charles Finney and others, including the Toronto Blessing. Constants and variables in revival, excesses in revival, the connection between revival and miracles and spiritual gifts will also be covered. Other issues discussed will be the relationship between revival and contextualization, revivals and their historical contexts.
