DESCRIPTION:
This course continues introducing the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary of the Arabic language with specific application to the Quran. The examples and readings found in the textbook are almost exclusively drawn from the Quran and the hadith literature. Also, as a help to the task of correct pronunciation, students will be provided with a recording of all the important exercises. Supplemental reading will be done each class from the Arabic Qur'an.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Ability to read the Qur'an in Arabic.
Ability to do basic exegesis of the Arabic text.
COURSE FORMAT:
Discussion of the relevant grammar.
Reading of the Arabic Qur'an.
REQUIRED READING:
Thackston, Wheeler M. An Introduction to Koranic and Classical Arabic. Bethseda, MD: IRANBOOKS, 1994.
A Qur'an, such as Yusef Ali's translation, with Arabic text.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Exercises from chapter 16 on.
A 750 word exegetical paper on a short quaranic passage.
PREREQUISITES: MR566, Introduction to the Arabic of the Quran or equivalent.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Elective. Concentration course for Islamic Studies at MA and ThM levels.
FINAL EXAMINATION: Yes.
