MI530: Missiological Integration in Context (India) (4 units)

DESCRIPTION: 

The purpose of SIS practicums is to help the participants integrate their missiological study in the context of intercultural relationships and mission.  The primary focus for this practicum is integration through experience in language and culture learning in relationships.  Participants will accompany Dr. Brewster for an intensive period of learning in India.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

• Sensitivity to issues involved in incarnational learning and ministry
• Develop a holistic view of serving cross-culturally
• Gain an experiential awareness of the pluralist world
• Integrate biblical and theological insights in missionary praxis
• Develop cross-cultural sensitivities and an understanding of the role of culture
• Develop skills in the analysis of culture and worldview
• Gain skills in ministering cross-culturally
• Begin to apply skills of language and culture learning in ministry experience

 

COURSE FORMAT:

Students who take MB530 for credit in June 2004 immediately followed by this MI530 practicum in India will receive 8 units of practicum credit. (Those who have previously taken MB530 will receive 4 units of practicum credit for MI530.)  The practicum will include: A one-day workshop in the spring quarter; a one-day workshop on location; daily self-directed learning; weekly debriefing and planning; a debriefing retreat upon completion of the practicum. Recreation/sightseeing will be included as appropriate.

ASSIGNMENTS:

• Participate in 2 workshops prior to the fieldwork.
• Read and prepare an annotated bibliography of relevant literature including the required texts plus an additional 300 pages.
• Maintain a daily personal journal during the course.
• Carry out daily learning through relationships
• Maintain accurate language and culture field-notes
• Contribute to regular group interaction times during the practicum.
• Participate in the debriefing session after the fieldwork.
• Write a 10-12-page paper integrating the study and fieldwork.
Additional Requirements for Th.M. students:
Read and critique two additional context specific books using the perspectives from the practicum.
