EL506: Listening and Speaking II (4 units, 0 credits)

DESCRIPTION:

This course is offered for students who need more practice with the language skills worked on in  EL501.  It focuses on the skills required to speak and comprehend fluent American-English in an academic setting.  Students will have opportunity to develop listening comprehension and note-taking strategies, and will be expected to participate in class discussions as well as to hold conversations with native English speakers.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

• Gain skill in listening to and in comprehending spoken English
• Gain confidence in speaking English
• Understand how to organize lecture notes
• Be prepared for participation in the advanced ESL class

 

COURSE FORMAT:

Students will take notes while listening to lectures, participate in group communication, and practice pronunciation.

 

REQUIRED READING:

Lebauer, Roni S. Learn to Listen Listen to Learn 2nd edition.

 

RECOMMENDED READING: None.

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

Students will do a variety of speaking and listening activities ranging from taking notes from a lecture to making individual presentations Students in EL506 need to demonstrate a deeper level of mastery of English language skills from those used in EL501.  Additional assignments will include turning in notes taken while listening to three extra lectures and turning in the results of three interviews with native English speakers.

 

PREREQUISITES: EL501 Listening and Speaking

 

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets partial requirements to advance within the ESL Program.

 

FINAL EXAMINATION: ESL Exit Exam.
