DESCRIPTION:
This course is offered for students who need more
practice with the language skills worked on in EL511. It focuses on the skills required to speak and comprehend fluent
English in an academic setting. These skills include listening comprehension,
note-taking, clarity in pronunciation, and group communication. Material is
presented in conjunction with the content of a specified Individualized
Distance Learning (IDL) course.
LEARNING
OUTCOMES:
• Develop skills for listening to a lecture in English
• Develop skills for taking notes from a lecture in English
• Gain experience using new English words and phrases in academic discussions
and presentations
COURSE
FORMAT:
The class will provide a variety of opportunities for
students to develop the listening and speaking skills necessary for success in
an academic setting. Students will take notes while listening to lectures,
participate in group discussions, and practice pronunciation.

RECOMMENDED
READING: None.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Students will do a variety of speaking and listening activities
which range from listening to lecture tapes to making individual
presentations. Students in EL516 need
to demonstrate a deeper level of mastery of English language skills using
different IDL assignments from those they used for EL511.
COREQUISITE:
Students must be concurrently registered in a specified IDL course.

EL511
