DESCRIPTION:

This course focuses on the skills required to speak and comprehend fluent English in an academic setting. These skills include listening comprehension, note-taking, clarity in pronunciation, and group communication. Material is presented in conjunction with the content of a specified Individualized Distance Learning (IDL) course.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1.  Review and reinforce learning outcomes in Level 1a (Intermediate) and Level 2a (High-Intermediate).

2.  Develop skills for listening to and taking notes from a lecture in English

-Recognizing verbal and non-verbal cues
-Identifying paraphrase, repetition, exemplification, and tangential information
-Drawing inferences based on factual information
-Strengthening critical thinking skills by brainstorming, supporting opinions, considering values, making decisions, solving problems, and analyzing issues.

3.  Gain experience using theological words and phrases in academic discussions and presentations

- Planning, organizing, and delivering informative, personal opinion, and persuasive speeches
- Praying with fluency and clarity, while learning common phrases and expressions
- Speaking with clarity in pronunciation and intonation, proper word choice, and few grammatical errors.

 

COURSE FORMAT:

This class meets twice weekly for two-hour sessions.  The class will provide a variety of opportunities for students to develop the listening and speaking skills necessary for success in an academic setting. Students will take notes while listening to lectures, participate in group discussions, and practice pronunciation.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Students will do a minimum of 10 speaking and listening activities, which range from listening to IDL lecture tapes to making individual presentations.

 

PREREQUISITES: Students must be concurrently registered in a specified IDL course.

 

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets partial requirements to advance from the ESL Program.

 

FINAL EXAM: ESL Exit Exam.
