Welcome to Fuller Theological Seminary Student Health Insurance
As a part of Fuller Seminary’s commitment to fostering a healthy community, Fuller offers a medical and dental plan to students in order to maintain basic health coverage, given minimum requirements are met. While enrollment is not mandatory for all students, a select few academic programs do have mandatory requirements for students to maintain basic health coverage.
Students required to meet this requirement can do so by purchasing health insurance through Fuller’s Student Health Insurance (SHI) office OR by completing an online waiver and demonstrating proof of comparable health insurance once per academic year. This excludes F1 or J1 International students.
Enrollment in the student health insurance plan is processed each quarter online at the time of class registration in the Register For Classes Module located on the Current Students Homepage. Students complete course enrollment and then click on STEP 4 to enroll in the SHI plan or Waive Out of the plan.
Fuller’s Health Insurance Policy
Enrolling In The Plan
Enrolling in the Fuller-sponsored plan is not mandatory for Domestic students. However, the following students are required to enroll in the plan or provide proof of comparable coverage by completing an online waiver:
- Ph.D. Level Students
- School of Psychology Students-Pasadena campus only
- F1 & J1 International Students (online waiver is not available to International students)
Students who are required to enroll in the SHI plan and fail to enroll by the waiver deadline date will be default enrolled, and their student account will be charged the appropriate SHI fee.
Masters-level students and students enrolled in other advanced degree programs are eligible to enroll in the medical plan as long as the 8 unit course requirement and Southern California residency requirement is met.
International Student Health Insurance Policy
Fuller requires F1 and J1 students to maintain medical insurance while enrolled at Fuller, regardless of the number of units enrolled in or if taking a vacation quarter.
International students not required to enroll in the plan include:
- Students when outside of the U.S.
- Students completing OPT
- Students with a terminated I-20
- Students enrolled in a low-residential program (for these low-residential programs, purchasing a travel plan for emergencies is strongly recommended)
*Due to COVID-19, Aetna Insurance is temporarily offering student health insurance coverage to all Fuller students who meet the 8-unit per quarter course requirement for the 2023-2024 academic year. This includes online-only students and domestic students that reside outside of Southern California but this is subject to change each academic year. Out-of-state domestic residents interested in enrolling in the plan should contact the Student Health Insurance Department at [email protected] to complete the enrollment application. Please note the out of state coverage is subject to change as determined by Aetna Insurance.

Waiving Out Of The Fuller Sponsored Plan
Online waivers are completed once per academic year during class registration. Once the waiver is submitted to Academic Health Plan, an online review of your plan benefits by a clearinghouse will be conducted to determine if your plan meets the requirements.
Students will receive an email from Academic Health Plan stating the waiver was Approved, Denied, or Pending additional information. This email should be saved for your records. If you do not receive an email your waiver has not been processed. If your waiver is marked pending you will need to follow the instructions to complete the waiver, otherwise, it will be considered Denied if not completed by the waiver deadline date.
Failure to complete a waiver or enroll will result in default enrollment into the Fuller sponsored plan and the student account charged the insurance fee.

Once payment verification is confirmed, Fuller will submit proof of student enrollment to Academic HealthPlans, and the dependent's enrollment can be processed. Students must pay health fees for dependents to Academic HealthPlans at the time of enrollment. The link to enroll a dependent is located on the Student Health Insurance enrollment tab or you can request enrollment once you have enrolled in the plan.
Once a dependent has been enrolled with Academic HealthPlans, all questions about a dependent's coverage or benefits will be directed to Academic HealthPlans. If you have any questions about the dependent enrollment process please email the Student Health Insurance office at [email protected].

Aetna Plan Resource Information
- Doctors: You may receive care from any doctor or hospital. But the Plan pays more — and you pay less — when you use an in-network doctor (see find a doctor above).
- Routine Office Visits: When you go to an AETNA doctor for a routine office visit, you pay a copay. If you have additional care, such as lab work or x-rays, they will be subject to the plan’s deductible and coinsurance. Students should also confirm that services DO NOT require Pre-Certification for medical treatment.
- Emergency & Urgent Care Services: Non-Emergency care in a hospital emergency room is not covered. Non- Urgent Care services in an urgent care are not covered.
- Prescription Drugs: When you use an Aetna In-Network pharmacy, you will be charged the lesser of the drug cost or a flat copay as long as you use a contracted pharmacy.
- Other Covered Services: You first pay an annual deductible (per person). Then the Plan pays their % when you use providers in the Aetna Open Choice PPO network.
- Out-of-Pocket Maximum: Once your costs reach the annual out-of-pocket maximum, the Plan pays 100% for eligible services for the rest of the policy year.
