Fuller Theological Seminary Has cancelled the 2021
In-person Commencement Ceremony; a Virtual Commencement will be held instead.
Dear Fuller Community,
I want to update you on plans we are developing for Commencement in 2021. Due to the current surge in infection and hospitalization rates and the regional stay-at-home orders announced by Gov. Newsom recently, we have had to make the proactive determination that we will not hold an in-person Commencement in 2021, but rather have a virtual ceremony. Even if hospitalization rates fall (which is the benchmark for California’s regional stay-at-home orders), a vaccine is widely distributed, and California is able to stabilize infection rates, it is unlikely that large scale events like our Commencement will be allowed for the foreseeable future so we had to make this unfortunate decision. Graduates expecting to participate in the 2021 Commencement ceremony will receive instructions from the Registrar’s office beginning in April. In the meantime, if you have any questions please email email@example.com. Graduates from prior years who have not had an opportunity to commence will be invited to participate in the first in-person Commencement we have, regardless of their participation in this virtual ceremony in June.
I join you in this disappointment as we are unable to recognize the achievements of our graduates in a manner that has become so expected during Commencement week. Commencement is the crowning event of our work together, and the faculty, staff, and administration grieve with you that this unavoidable decision had to be made. However, much like most aspects of life in 2020, we must find new ways forward and we look forward to celebrating their achievements in a virtual gathering in June 2021.
We pray daily for your safety and well-being during these difficult times, and thank God for the gift you are to Fuller. May the presence, grace, and joy of the living Christ be manifest in your homes and lives this Advent season, and may the Holy Spirit bring it about that your last two quarters (winter and spring 2021) will be the best yet despite these circumstances as you complete your course of study here at Fuller Seminary.
